State Rep. Nick Santucci | The Ohio House of Representatives
State Representative Nick Santucci (R-Howland Twp.) has successfully advanced legislation through the House requiring that U.S. and Ohio flags flown over public buildings be made in the United States.
The bill also prohibits state agencies and political subdivisions from using public funds to purchase a U.S. or Ohio flag not made domestically. Presently, only 6% of American flags are produced outside the United States, with 94% of these imported flags originating from China. Ohio flags are manufactured by inmates at the Ohio Reformatory for Women through the Ohio Penal Industries.
“It is only appropriate that American flags be made in America,” Santucci stated. “This legislation will ensure government entities are using tax dollars to only purchase made-in-America flags.”
While state law already mandates that state agencies purchase Ohio flags through OPI, there is currently no guidance for political subdivisions regarding flag purchases.
The legislation will now proceed to the Senate for further consideration.
