Majority Whip Nick Santucci of Niles cast his vote in favor of House Bill 54, the State Transportation Budget, which was passed unanimously last week. The bill is designed to allocate funds for Ohio's transportation system with a focus on maintaining progress within the state.
"This bill is a great investment into our state," Santucci stated. "The funds that we dedicated to roads and infrastructure improvements in this bill will have lasting impacts, especially on our workforce, making it easier and safer for Ohioans to get to work."
House Bill 54 serves as the main funding source for transportation infrastructure development and maintenance for fiscal years 2026-2027. It received bipartisan support and includes measures to maintain Ohio’s infrastructure, encourage economic growth, and enhance public safety.
The bill dedicates over $393 million to new highway construction, aiming to improve transportation infrastructure for future generations. Additionally, it establishes the Ohio Airport Improvement Program Fund to aid airports not receiving federal grants, enhancing their infrastructure and operations.
To promote economic development and innovation, House Bill 54 allocates $15 million annually to the Ohio Workforce Mobility Partnership Program. This initiative supports workforce transportation in both rural and urban areas through funding for various projects. The bill also raises funding for Transportation Improvement Districts (TIDs) to $9 million per year, fostering job creation. Furthermore, it introduces the Division of Advanced Air Mobility (AAM) within the Ohio Department of Transportation.
Ohio boasts a comprehensive infrastructure system. According to ODOT, it has the fifth largest interstate system with over 8,000 lane miles and ranks third in total number of bridges at 26,729. It also stands fourth nationwide in active rail miles with 5,081 miles.
The bill now awaits consideration by the Ohio Senate.
