The Ohio House Homeland Security Committee has passed House Bill 232, according to State Representatives Jamie Callender (R-Concord) and Mike Loychik (R-Bazetta). This legislation aims to create a Historic and Patriotic Education license plate to support the educational and conservation activities of the Ohio Society, Sons of the American Revolution.
Founded 19 days before the establishment of the National Society, the Ohio Society of the Sons of the American Revolution operates 23 local chapters with nearly 2,000 members. The organization is dedicated to supporting education, preserving Revolutionary War history, and fostering patriotism in future generations. Revenue generated from this new license plate will fund these initiatives.
Ohio currently offers 303 special interest plates that support various organizations, including local school districts, the ALS Foundation, and Playhouse Square. These special plates provide financial contributions ranging from $0 to $35 when renewed.
"While not a part of the original 13 colonies, many Revolutionary War veterans settled in the Northwest Territory," said Callender. "Preserving their graves and legacy is critical not only for the history of the Revolution but also for understanding how Ohio was settled."
"House Bill 232 is focused on educating both current and future students around Ohio," said Loychik. "The history of our great state and nation needs to be preserved, and our legislation aims to honor this proud heritage just in time for the United States’ 250th Anniversary of independence. Patriotism, civic virtue, and community service are values that must be passed on to the next generation."
House Bill 232 now awaits a vote on the House floor before proceeding to additional hearings in the Senate.
