State Representative Nick Santucci (R-Howland Twp.) has introduced House Joint Resolution 5 (HJR 5) in Ohio, which aims to establish a constitutional right to hunt and fish. If passed by the legislature, the resolution will be presented to Ohio voters in 2024. This move follows in the footsteps of 23 other states that have already amended their constitutions to protect hunting, angling, and trapping.

"The right to hunt and fish is deeply woven into the fabric of Ohio's heritage," stated Representative Santucci. He emphasized that this joint resolution is not only about preserving traditions but also about protecting the state's environment, supporting rural economies, and safeguarding individual rights. Santucci stressed the importance of standing together to prevent the erosion of these rights by misguided policies or special interest groups.

Ohio has a significant hunting community, with 479,000 hunting licenses purchased last year alone. The hunting industry contributes a substantial $1.3 billion annually to the state's economy and supports 15,500 jobs. Santucci highlighted the economic benefits of hunting and fishing, stating, "Hunting and fishing add over a billion dollars to Ohio's economy every year, supporting not only jobs but also funding critical conservation efforts."

The introduction of HJR 5 is a step towards recognizing the significance of hunting and fishing in Ohio and ensuring that these activities are protected for future generations. The resolution has been referred to the House Committee on Energy and Natural Resources for further consideration.

Ohioans who value their outdoor traditions and the economic benefits they bring eagerly await the outcome of this joint resolution. If passed, it will solidify the rights of sportsmen and women and contribute to the preservation of Ohio's rich natural heritage.
